Did meat make us smarter?

Public domain photograph of various meats. (Be...Image via Wikipedia

My wife and I haven't eaten meat since the end of February, relying on an abundance of seafood for our main source of protein. But a friend just sent me the following link to a piece on National Public Radio about the diet of our earliest ancestors.

I am not going to quibble about all the points this report makes, but I will note the Neanderthals mentioned in the last sentence were easily superseded by smarter people who migrated to what is now Europe from the same region of Africa.

Free samples, bargains at Whole Foods

Whole Foods Market logoImage via Wikipedia

Now that we're eating a lot of meat substitutes, a trip to Whole Foods Market in Paramus every couple of weeks is a must. The store has the best selection of products from Original Field Roast Grain Meat Co. -- such as a vegetarian roast or meatloaf, sausage and deli cuts (not Whole Grain Meat Co., as I wrote earlier).

These products are made with wheat gluten, vegetables and spices.

Whole Foods is not big on free samples. You do a lot better in that regard at Costco. But yesterday, I had some romaine salad with feta cheese, and a second small plate of crackers, hummus and olive salad. Three seniors at the cheese counter tipped me off to another sample -- an $11.99-a-pound, semi-soft cheese whose name I don't remember.

There were some good buys, too. Two, 32-ounce bottles of organic lemonade (11% juice) were $3; three pounds of conventional Driscoll strawberries were $5; and conventional sweet corn from Georgia was 25 cents an ear.

We had the corn for dinner and it surprised us with its sweetness -- all the way from the Deep South.

Today's food coverage in The Record

In The Record's Better Living section today, on F-2, we read about an "authentic" Greek place that serves burgers, mozzarella sticks and Buffalo wings. I and many other North Jerseyans shop frequently at Korean markets, but an item about Korean black garlic lists no Korean store that stocks it.

These two food reports, an illustrated recipe and a story about wine ($12 a bottle and higher) are all the newspaper could muster on a Wednesday, when readers in the past could feast on an entire Food section.

The Food section was dropped by Publisher Stephen A. Borg, who promised readers food coverage "every day." Unfortunately, despite an occasional house ad touting "every day" food news, there is no food coverage on Thursdays and a vast majority of Saturdays. Monday's coverage usually consists of a single recipe for vegetarians.
