Non-GMO wild rice, 40-ounce marinara and much more

Ingredients are: Long Grain Brown Rice, Sweet Brown Rice, Wild Rice, Whole Grain Wehani Rice and Whole Grain Black Japonica Rice.

Editor's note: Today, I discuss visits to Costco Wholesale, Aroma Espresso Bar and Whole Foods Market.

After an absence of more than a week, I noticed a few changes at Costco Wholesale in Hackensack, the warehouse store that is only a couple of miles from my home.

For one thing, boxes of apples, peaches and other premium fruit have been consolidated in one area and the aisles through them are shorter and oriented differently.

But it is still no easier to find what you're looking for, and on Monday, I had to ask an employee to point me to the 5-pound bags of limes ($4.99).

I also can't shake the feeling that much of the fruit has been handled and picked through by other customers, who think nothing of opening even clear-plastic packages and testing each piece -- for what, I'm not sure.

I picked up Lundberg Wild Blend Rice -- a mixture of wild and whole-grain brown rice -- and noticed the "NON-GMO Project Verified" stamp on the BPA-free bag (4 pounds for $9.39).

Della Organic Long-Grain Brown Rice, also sold at Costco, is from another grower that pledges the rice hasn't been genetically modified.

Two 40-ounce bottles of Victoria Marinara Sauce were on sale for about $3 each, below.

At Costco, Kirkland Signature Soft & Chewy Granola Bars appear to have replaced Chewy Granola Bars from Kashi, one of my favorite snack bars.

A manufacturer's instant rebate reduced the price of two 40-ounce jars of Victoria Marinara Sauce to $5.99.

Made from Italian tomatoes, Victoria is highly rated by Consumer Reports, and the 40 ounces allows you to cook 1 pound of pasta at a time, with sauce to spare.

On my last few visits to the Hackensack Costco, I haven't been able to find Kashi Chewy Granola Bars Trail Mix, a favorite because of the almonds they contain.

On Monday, I did find an enormous box of 60 Kirkland Signature Soft & Chewy Granola Bars ($8.69), but they don't have any almonds in them and each bar is under an ounce.

The Organic Quinoa Salad at Aroma Espresso Bar in Paramus is misnamed.

The staff at Aroma let me down today.

A large Cafe Au Lait was $2.75 (16 ounces); a small piece of chocolate is complimentary.

Poor service in Paramus

The menu, including 9 healthy salads, impressed me when I discovered Aroma Espresso Bar last December at the Garden State Plaza mall in Paramus, so I returned a couple of times more.

But this afternoon, the staff served me an unseasoned salad and even forgot to give me the lemon-olive oil dressing, which I learned later is supposed to be served on the side.

I ordered the Organic Quinoa Salad ($8.50), only to discover it is mostly chopped vegetables with barely a couple of ounces of quinoa (KEEN-wha) on top.

The salad was unseasoned and undressed, so I added black pepper and a little salt.

As I was leaving, I mentioned to an employee, who appeared to be the manager, that I couldn't taste the dressing, and he said it is always served on the side.

"Sorry about that," he said weakly.

At Garden State Plaza, Nordstrom has a cafe with a small menu.

Pan Seared Atlantic Cod was one of the choices today.

One of three kimchis at Whole Foods Market in Paramus.

Kimchi at Whole Foods

Whole Foods Market in Paramus is now selling three kinds of kimchi on its pickles bar for $9.99 a pound.

The kimchi is labeled "premium" and is said to come from "Mama O."

I stopped to chat with one of the employees at the store's wonderful fresh-fish counter, remarking about the stark difference in color between wild-caught king salmon and farmed sockeye salmon.

He said Whole Foods' farmed salmon, which was a pale orange, is colored by a yeast added to the food, not chemicals, as is the practice on many fish farms.

On the way out, I stopped to buy 5 ears of bicolor corn from Georgia for $2.

My wife just steamed the shucked corn and my ear was pleasantly sweet, needing nothing.

Bowled over by quality ingredients from Costco

My dinner at home Friday was served in bowls: CedarLane Chopped Vegetable & Barley Soup, above, and below with grated Pecorino Romano Cheese; and an Earthbound Farm salad, bottom photo, all from Costco Wholesale in Hackensack.

You can sip or drink many soups, but the spoon isn't optional with this thick, chewy vegetarian soup in a light tomato broth. You'll find corn, carrot, barley, potato, onion and more in the soup. The container was in the freezer with a use-by date of 11/26/12.

Sunset-brand hothouse beefsteak tomato and gourmet cucumber top an Organic Spring Mix salad from Earthbound Farm in a dressing of extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. All the produce is from Costco Wholesale.

Organic whole-wheat spaghetti with salted cod fish complements fresh, wild-caught Icelandic haddock coated with a Super Spice Mixture (a combination of every spice in your cupboard). Cod fish, haddock and the lime came from Costco. The pasta is from Trader Joe's.

A Jamaican specialty called ackee and salt fish was made with cod from Costco.

Above, two of the ingredients in a frittata with beefsteak tomato and homemade pesto that I finished under the broiler, below. I combined whole organic eggs, egg whites, grated cheese and low-fat milk to make the fluffy frittata, which I started on the stove. Everything but the pesto came from Costco Wholesale in Hackensack.

I added the sliced tomato and pesto while the 10-inch pan was on the stove and moved the frittata to the oven after the bottom was set.

Kirkland Signature Organic No-Salt Seasoning is a blend of 21 spices, dried herbs and other ingredients.

Neither the Sunset Campari Tomatoes, above, or Beefsteak Tomatoes, below, looked very good today at the Hackensack warehouse store. They varied in color and ripeness, and many looked like they had been handled by customers. The small tomatoes were $5.49 for 2 pounds and the bigger ones were $6.99 for 5 pounds. I bought a trio of Sunset Gourmet Cucumbers instead for $3.99. Sunset is based in Canada, but all of the tomatoes and cucumbers were grown in Mexico.

Costco instant coupons were available today on Kashi Trail Mix Chewy Granola Bars, above left, and 32-ounce jars of Classico Tomato & Basil Pasta Sauce, below left. Thirty Kashi bars were $8.79 ($3 off) and the pasta sauce was $4.79 ($2 off) or about $1.60 a bottle.

I passed up a $6-off instant coupon on Kashi GoLean Crisp Variety Pack, because those bars have more calories, fat and sodium than Kashi Trail Mix bars, which help me skip lunch.

When it's time to go to Costco

CostcoImage via Wikipedia

When it's time to go to Costco Wholesale, my wife always seems to have something else to do.

We live only 2 miles from the warehouse store in Hackensack -- and the ShopRite is farther from our home -- so we often drop in to pick up a few things once or twice a week.

But when we have a longer list .... This is the second week in a row my wife was unavailable.

Today, I picked up 2 pounds of fresh Pacific cod at $7.99 a pound; Kirkland Signature Smoked Wild Sockeye Salmon at $15.39 for 1 pound; Earthbound Farm Organic Spring Mix at $4.49 for 1 pound, a slightly lower price; and clementines from Spain at $5.99 for a 5-pound box.

Earlier, on the way home from cardiac rehab at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, I stopped at the ShopRite in that city to renew a prescription.

Clementines were $4.99 or $2 off, but they were from Morocco and I passed.

I did pick up two half-gallons of ShopRite 2% Lactose-Free Milk at $2.99 each (40 cents off). That compared to $4.19 for Lactaid-brand milk and $4.99 for Organic Valley Lactose-Free Milk.

Jenny-brand Kalamata String Figs from Greece were $2.99 for 14 ounces ($1 off). They are sun dried and preservative free.

At Costco, 3 pounds of broccoli florets were $4.99 and three half-gallons of organic milk were $8.99. Thirty Kashi Trail Mix Chewy Granola Bars were $11.79.

The prices of hothouse-grown Roma and Campari tomatoes have gone up to $2.50 and $3 a pound, so I picked up a 5-pound box of Sunset-brand beefsteak tomatoes for $6.99 or about $1.20 a pound.

I also bought toothbrushes, body soap, vegetarian barley-and-vegetable soup, Naked Juice Mighty Mango smoothies and cranberry juice.
