A fan of the new Costco Anywhere Visa Card runs into a big Catch-22

Banners touting the new Visa credit card at the Costco Wholesale Business Center in Hackensack emphasize the bigger cash rewards, compared to the old American Express card, but don't mention Visa's foreign-currency transaction fee.

The transition to a Visa credit card from American Express hasn't been smooth for some Costco Wholesale members whose howls of protest are all over Facebook.

We received our new Visa cards long before the changeover on June 20, and I had absolutely no problem when I purchased a few items at the Costco Wholesale Business Center in Hackensack on that day.

I liked the new card, because it offered more cash back than the American Express Card on purchases at Costco, including gasoline, as well as on restaurant meals and travel, and at other stores.

But then I received a statement from Citi that one of my Costco accounts was past due.

I was hit with an interest charge of $17.84 and a foreign-transaction fee of 50 cents for fast-food restaurant meals my wife inadvertently paid for with the Costco Anywhere Visa Card while we were on vacation in Montreal.

Catch-22

I wasn't able to reach anyone at Citi on the phone, but in a message, wrote I had never received a statement, and asked for the interest charge to be reversed.

Citi declined, but agreed to send me the statement I never received.

And what I got in the mail was a statement from my old American Express TrueEarnings Card for $885.96 with a due date of July 5.

Here is the Catch-22:

I had that American Express account set up for auto pay, as I do for all my credit cards, and paperless billing.

Usually, I would get an email from American Express, saying my statement was ready to view on my computer, and I would print it out and put the payment coupon in my checkbook to deduct it on the due day.

This time, I didn't get an email from American Express, and my payment was never deducted on July 5.

The Costco Wholesale Business Center in Hackensack. A couple of weeks ago, I overheard two members tell an employee they never received their new Visa credit cards, but had received statements showing someone stole them and made purchases.

$677M profit

I read comments from a lot of Costco members on Facebook about what great service American Express provides.

I agreed with them, but this time American Express really let me down.

Then, I read a brief story in my daily newspaper, reporting American Express saw its second-quarter profit jump by 37 percent, "helped by the sale of its Costco credit card portfolio...."

"AmEx sold the Costco portfolio to Citigroup, providing a one-time after-tax gain of $677 million for the April-June quarter.

"The credit card company said it earned $2.02 billion in the period or $2.10 per share."

So, AmEx is laughing all the way to the bank at the expense of some Costco members.

'Global acceptance'

In the July 2016 edition of Costco Connection magazine, company officials say they chose Citi because it is the world's largest credit-card issuer.

The card, one Costco executive said, has "global acceptance, great cash-back opportunities and benefits such as travel and purchase protection to provide peace of mind."

But the word "anywhere" in the name of the new credit card is an exaggeration:

Costco overlooked the 3% foreign-currency transaction fee that makes the Anywhere Visa Card a poor choice when outside the United States.

American Express also charges a foreign-currency transaction fee, so the Visa card is no improvement there.

In another Catch-22, Citi's website says the foreign-transaction fee doesn't include purchases at Costco worldwide.

But when I visited two Costco warehouses in Montreal in July, they wouldn't accept my Costco Visa card or even a Visa-branded bank debit card.

I had to use a MasterCard, and pay a currency-transaction fee.

Will close account

Now, I've added my wife as an authorized user on my Costco Visa Business account, allowing me to close our second Costco account.

But when I was finally able to reach a customer service representative at Citi on Monday afternoon, I was told to wait to close the account until after I receive my cash-back coupon in February.

And once I explained that I never received my last American Express statement, she said she would reverse the interest charges I paid.

September update

A few weeks after I posted this, the credit still had not shown up on my statement.

So, I called again last week, and was assured I would get a refund of the $17.84 in interest.

And a week or so later, I looked at my statement online and saw the credit of $17.84. Case closed.

My 2% Costco reward certificate covers membership fee two times over

The Costco Wholesale Business Center at 80 S. River St. in Hackensack is a stress-free alternative to the bigger, far busier Costco Wholesale warehouse a few miles away in Teterboro, especially if you live nearby and want to pick up only a few things. The warehouse also has a food court.

My 2% Reward Certificate from Costco Wholesale arrived in the mail this week and repaid me more than twice for an annual $110 Executive Membership.

The check for $241 back on Costco purchases in the past year is in addition to the $274 in cash rebates I received in February from American Express for purchases at Costco, gas stations, restaurants and other businesses.

The new Costco Visa credit card will return even more cash back then the displaced American Express card.

On Monday afternoon, I picked up KIND snack bars, mangoes and chewing gum at the Costco Wholesale Business Center in Hackensack.

I handed over my 2% Reward Certificate to pay for them, and walked away with about $209 in cash.

What's not to like?

First day for Costco Visa credit card, basket full of bargains at H Mart

Starting today, the Costco Wholesale Business Center in Hackensack is among the hundreds of Costco warehouses in the United States that accept only Visa Credit Cards, including the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi, replacing the American Express True Earnings card.

Now, you also can use your Visa credit card to pay for fresh-baked pizzas and other purchases at the Hackensack food court, which was cash only (80 S. River St., Hackensack; warehouse is closed Sundays).

At the Costco Wholesale Business Center in Hackensack today, the switch to Visa credit cards from longtime partner American Express was imperceptible.

You could describe the shopping experience at the Hackensack warehouse as Costco Lite -- plenty of empty parking spaces in the lot, only a handful of customers pushing shopping carts through the cavernous space and no waiting to check out.

The warehouse delivers orders placed online by restaurants, caterers and other small businesses, and has only about 30% of the consumer items you'll find at the bigger, far busier Costco Wholesale in Teterboro.

Today, the Hackensack warehouse was the same oasis of calm it has been since its March 15 opening.

I used my Costco Visa credit card to pay for:

Three large cans of Dole Pineapple Juice ($4.19 with an instant coupon); Premier Protein Shake (18 11-ounce containers for $19.99 with an instant coupon); 3 pounds of premium Apricots from California ($5.49); 1 pound of Earthbound Farm Organic Spring Mix ($4.49) and a large cup of non-fat vanilla yogurt from the food court ($1.35).

More cash back

The new Costco Visa credit card gives you more cash back than did the American Express card:

You get 4% cash back instead of 3% on gasoline, including Costco gas; 3% back instead of 2% on restaurant meals and travel purchases worldwide, and 2% back on purchases at Costco.

If you use the Costco Visa card to buy gasoline and charge restaurant meals, you easily recoup the annual Costco membership fee of $55 or $110, and much more.

Thanks to an instant Costco coupon, three 46-ounce cans of Dole 100% Pineapple Juice (not from concentrate) were a better buy per ounce than 24 8.4-ounce cans, below. The bigger cans are marked non-GMO, meaning they don't contain genetically modified or engineered ingredients.

At H Mart, 260 Bergen Turnpike in Little Ferry, Baby Mustard Greens were reduced to 68 cents a pound, and cans of Moroccan Sardines in Olive Oil were about $1 each, below.

Sabri-brand Sardines also were available in vegetable oil and in tomato sauce.

Fresh fish and fruit

Just about everything I bought on Sunday at H Mart in Little Ferry was reduced or a good buy.

Some of the deals require you to have the store's loyalty card, which gives you $10 off after you spend $1,000 (1% rebate).

Our Sunday dinner included fresh wild-caught whole whiting ($2.99 a pound) that we dredged in cornmeal and pan fried; and big bunches of Baby Mustard Greens (68 cents a pound) we washed, cut up and sauteed with chopped fresh garlic.

A 15-pound bag of Kokuho Yellow Label White Rice from California was reduced to $10.99; a large Seedless Watermelon was $4.99; and a box of 14 sugar-sweet Ataulfo or Champagne Mangoes from Mexico was $9.99 or $1 more than a week earlier.

That compares to $5.49 for six Ataulfo Mangoes at the Hackensack Costco.

Two packages of Nature's Soy Fried Tofu, which is packed with protein, were $3 or half price.

Marinades for pork and beef also were on sale, but I couldn't find any without monosodium glutamate (MSG). I settled for one with a low sodium content.

While I waited for my fish to be cleaned, I walked over to the table where free seafood samples were available, including a broiled mussel topped with fish eggs, snow-crab meat, boiled octopus and fried smelts; then stopped for free samples of cold noodles in broth and a kimchi dumpling on the way to the register.

Costco members will earn more cash back with new Visa credit cards

Costco Wholesale members are receiving details in the mail on the transition to Visa credit cards from American Express.

By VICTOR E. SASSON

The end of Costco Wholesale's long relationship with American Express will translate into more cash rebates for members who use the new Visa credit cards.

And for the first time, both the business credit card and consumer card will give identical rebates for purchases inside and outside a warehouse.

The change to Visa as membership and credit card is scheduled for June 20, 2016.

That's when the rebate on gasoline purchases worldwide, including gas at Costco, goes up to 4% from 3% with a Costco-American Express True Earnings Card.

The American Express True Earnings Business Card already gives 4% back on gasoline.

3% back at restaurants

Cash back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases goes up to 3% from 2%; on purchases from Costco and Costco.com, the rebate will go to 2% from 1%; and all other purchases will earn 1%, the same as now.

Any cash rebates you earn on American Express credit cards will be transferred automatically to the new Visa cards.

The new cards will be mailed to you, so there is no need to reapply and no credit report will be pulled, Costco says.

And, like the American Express cards, there is no annual fee with the new Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi and Anywhere Visa Business Card by Citi.

How rebates pay

Costco members pay an annual fee of $55 to $110, but rebates earned inside and outside of the warehouse more than cover that expense.

That means you enjoy great Costco prices on food, clothing, electronics and more, and get to laugh all the way to the bank with hundreds of dollars in cash rebates from American Express and soon Citi.

The Executive Gold Star Membership ($110) also entitles you to an additional 2% annual cash rebate from Costco itself, up to $750.
