A fan of the new Costco Anywhere Visa Card runs into a big Catch-22

Banners touting the new Visa credit card at the Costco Wholesale Business Center in Hackensack emphasize the bigger cash rewards, compared to the old American Express card, but don't mention Visa's foreign-currency transaction fee.

The transition to a Visa credit card from American Express hasn't been smooth for some Costco Wholesale members whose howls of protest are all over Facebook.

We received our new Visa cards long before the changeover on June 20, and I had absolutely no problem when I purchased a few items at the Costco Wholesale Business Center in Hackensack on that day.

I liked the new card, because it offered more cash back than the American Express Card on purchases at Costco, including gasoline, as well as on restaurant meals and travel, and at other stores.

But then I received a statement from Citi that one of my Costco accounts was past due.

I was hit with an interest charge of $17.84 and a foreign-transaction fee of 50 cents for fast-food restaurant meals my wife inadvertently paid for with the Costco Anywhere Visa Card while we were on vacation in Montreal.

Catch-22

I wasn't able to reach anyone at Citi on the phone, but in a message, wrote I had never received a statement, and asked for the interest charge to be reversed.

Citi declined, but agreed to send me the statement I never received.

And what I got in the mail was a statement from my old American Express TrueEarnings Card for $885.96 with a due date of July 5.

Here is the Catch-22:

I had that American Express account set up for auto pay, as I do for all my credit cards, and paperless billing.

Usually, I would get an email from American Express, saying my statement was ready to view on my computer, and I would print it out and put the payment coupon in my checkbook to deduct it on the due day.

This time, I didn't get an email from American Express, and my payment was never deducted on July 5.

The Costco Wholesale Business Center in Hackensack. A couple of weeks ago, I overheard two members tell an employee they never received their new Visa credit cards, but had received statements showing someone stole them and made purchases.

$677M profit

I read comments from a lot of Costco members on Facebook about what great service American Express provides.

I agreed with them, but this time American Express really let me down.

Then, I read a brief story in my daily newspaper, reporting American Express saw its second-quarter profit jump by 37 percent, "helped by the sale of its Costco credit card portfolio...."

"AmEx sold the Costco portfolio to Citigroup, providing a one-time after-tax gain of $677 million for the April-June quarter.

"The credit card company said it earned $2.02 billion in the period or $2.10 per share."

So, AmEx is laughing all the way to the bank at the expense of some Costco members.

'Global acceptance'

In the July 2016 edition of Costco Connection magazine, company officials say they chose Citi because it is the world's largest credit-card issuer.

The card, one Costco executive said, has "global acceptance, great cash-back opportunities and benefits such as travel and purchase protection to provide peace of mind."

But the word "anywhere" in the name of the new credit card is an exaggeration:

Costco overlooked the 3% foreign-currency transaction fee that makes the Anywhere Visa Card a poor choice when outside the United States.

American Express also charges a foreign-currency transaction fee, so the Visa card is no improvement there.

In another Catch-22, Citi's website says the foreign-transaction fee doesn't include purchases at Costco worldwide.

But when I visited two Costco warehouses in Montreal in July, they wouldn't accept my Costco Visa card or even a Visa-branded bank debit card.

I had to use a MasterCard, and pay a currency-transaction fee.

Will close account

Now, I've added my wife as an authorized user on my Costco Visa Business account, allowing me to close our second Costco account.

But when I was finally able to reach a customer service representative at Citi on Monday afternoon, I was told to wait to close the account until after I receive my cash-back coupon in February.

And once I explained that I never received my last American Express statement, she said she would reverse the interest charges I paid.

September update

A few weeks after I posted this, the credit still had not shown up on my statement.

So, I called again last week, and was assured I would get a refund of the $17.84 in interest.

And a week or so later, I looked at my statement online and saw the credit of $17.84. Case closed.

Costco members will earn more cash back with new Visa credit cards

Costco Wholesale members are receiving details in the mail on the transition to Visa credit cards from American Express.

The end of Costco Wholesale's long relationship with American Express will translate into more cash rebates for members who use the new Visa credit cards.

And for the first time, both the business credit card and consumer card will give identical rebates for purchases inside and outside a warehouse.

The change to Visa as membership and credit card is scheduled for June 20, 2016.

That's when the rebate on gasoline purchases worldwide, including gas at Costco, goes up to 4% from 3% with a Costco-American Express True Earnings Card.

The American Express True Earnings Business Card already gives 4% back on gasoline.

3% back at restaurants

Cash back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases goes up to 3% from 2%; on purchases from Costco and Costco.com, the rebate will go to 2% from 1%; and all other purchases will earn 1%, the same as now.

Any cash rebates you earn on American Express credit cards will be transferred automatically to the new Visa cards.

The new cards will be mailed to you, so there is no need to reapply and no credit report will be pulled, Costco says.

And, like the American Express cards, there is no annual fee with the new Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi and Anywhere Visa Business Card by Citi.

How rebates pay

Costco members pay an annual fee of $55 to $110, but rebates earned inside and outside of the warehouse more than cover that expense.

That means you enjoy great Costco prices on food, clothing, electronics and more, and get to laugh all the way to the bank with hundreds of dollars in cash rebates from American Express and soon Citi.

The Executive Gold Star Membership ($110) also entitles you to an additional 2% annual cash rebate from Costco itself, up to $750.

ShopRite Spring Water, bibimbap with squid, a free Costco shopping trip

ShopRite now sells its own Spring Water in the same 24 half-liter bottles as Poland Spring. The label list the source as natural springs in Pennsylvania.

Last week at the Paramus store, a 24-pack of ShopRite Spring Water was on sale for $2.99 each, compared to $3.33 for a 24-pack of Poland Spring Spring Water when you bought three.

Editor's note: Today, I discuss a week of food shopping, eating out and takeout -- from bottled spring water to a meatless Korean bibimbap to a restaurant-quality Italian-style fish dinner.

ShopRite almost always seems to have a sale on three 24-bottle packs of Poland Spring Spring Water.

But now, you can beat even that deal when ShopRite puts its own brand of Spring Water on sale, as it did last week at the Paramus store (224 Route 4 east).

An 18-ounce package of blueberries from Chile were $7.99 at the Paramus ShopRite last week, compared to $5.49 at Costco Wholesale in Teterboro. An 11-ounce package of blueberries was $6.99 at ShopRite.
Bibimbap -- a Korean dish of sizzling rice, vegetables and ground beef served in a hot stone bowl -- is available in two meatless versions at So Gong Dong, a soft-tofu and barbecue restaurant. I ordered the Bibimbap with Squid ($12.99) and added gochujang, a spicy red-pepper paste, from a squeeze bottle on the table. It was served without the traditional raw or cooked egg on top.

A pork soft tofu stew, served in a stone bowl, is boiling when it is brought to the table -- hot enough to poach a fresh egg that is provided along with another stone bowl of steamed rice and five complimentary side dishes ($9.99). The stew can be ordered from little spicy to more spicy.

 Free Costco shopping

My wife went to Costco Wholesale in Teterboro on Wednesday -- her first trip in more than two weeks -- armed with rebate coupons from American Express, which issues the True Earnings-Costco credit card.

She bought $261.93 worth of fresh produce, fish, cheese, juices and packaged items, and came home with $10.25 in change.

Fresh wild-caught Atlantic Cod from Iceland was only $7.99 a pound, a wedge of imported Parmigiano Reggiano was $8.49 a pound and a 10.7-ounce bottle of Ground Saigon Cinnamon was $2.49.

Organic bananas were $1.99 for 3 pounds, and a 10-pound bag of non-organic carrots was $5.99.

A 3-pound bag of raw, sodium-free California Almonds was $17.99. They are ideal for roasting at home and dusting with the Vietnamese cinnamon sold at Costco.

She also bought toilet paper, bleach, flowers, body wash and chewing gum, among other items.

Jerry's Gourmet & More in Englewood calls its restaurant-quality takeout dinners Meals To Go, but they could just as well be called A Little of This, A Little of That: The dinner I bought included Sea Trout Fillets, Grilled Zucchini, Eggplant Parmigiana, Vegetable Frittata, Roasted Potatoes, Shrimp and Broccoli Dumplings, and Mushroom Stuffed with Crab Meat -- all ready to be plated and reheated in the microwave.

The dinners are marked down to $5.99 after 4 p.m., if there are any left. On Friday afternoon, I got the last three Sea Trout Marechiaro dinners. Jerry's is at 410 S. Dean St., Englewood.

On Friday, one of the many delicious cheeses you could sample for free was Scamorza, a dried mozzarella.

Among the premium pastas available at Jerry's was Organic Fusilli (1.1 pounds for $6.79), above, as well as 8.8-ounce boxes of Spinosi Pasta for $5.99 each, below. At ShopRite and Whole Foods Market, you can find 1-pound packages of Organic Whole Wheat Pasta from Italy for $1.25 to $1.49 each.
